Shaking Up the DFW Sports Media Market

So there’s this new podcast network in the Metroplex called The DUB, as in DF-”W”, or “W,” as in a win. No big surprise it’s sports centric since I’m involved, but what may be surprising is the quality of shows and the impressive lists of guests that we’re rolling out on a weekly basis.

As of now, The DUB consists of four sports related programs, with an eye on possible expansion in the future. We cover the four major US sports – football, baseball, hockey, and basketball – and the hosts of the shows are all former players of our local teams. For football there’s “Lemme Tell You Somethin’” with former Dallas Cowboys Nate Newton and Isiah Stanback, for baseball we have the “Big Head Pod” with former Texas Ranger Kevin Mench (who has a very large cranium), for hockey it’s “Suds with Luds” with former Dallas Star Craig Ludwig, and for basketball we have “Harp’s Court” with former Dallas Mavericks greats Derek Harper and Mark Aguirre. That’s a pretty salty list if I do say so myself.

The DUB started out a few months back as just a casual conversation between Julie Dobbs (97.1 FM “The Freak”, “The Mom Game“) and myself, and soon DFW radio legend Mike Rhyner and the Rangers’ Emily Jones got involved as well. Next I brought in my business partners Spencer Bass and Mark Caffey, we started talking to Vokal studios, began the search for our hosts, and “BAM!” before we knew it we had a podcast network on our hands.

As I referenced before, the quality of guests we’ve had on the various shows is pretty amazing – including big-time star athletes like John Salley, Shawn Marion, Spud Webb, and Jalen Brunson on “Harp’s Court”, Derian Hatcher, Chris Chelios, Vern Fiddler, and Marty Turco on “Suds with Luds”, Michael Young, Raphael Palmeiro, and John Rocker on “Big Head Pod” and Larry Brown, Patrick Crayton, and Kenny Gant on “Lemme Tell You Somethin.’” Mix in our quarterly show “DUB’d“, where we feature the whole gang together, and you’ve got some pretty riveting entertainment. Oh, I also should probably mention here that since these are podcasts, things are unfiltered, and honestly we’re never really sure what the shows will uncover or how they’ll turn out. Take the ride at your own risk lol.

When they’re all in the same room, just about anything can happen…

On the business side, the initial thinking behind The DUB was based on my background in sports sponsorships with the Stars and Rangers. What if we had a one-stop location, where an advertiser could reach the fans of ALL the major teams in the area, and do it at a very affordable price? This would allow marketers to hit all four fan bases, without having to cherry pick and choose between them due to budget restraints. They’d be able to stretch their budgets much further, and, when it made sense, we could take the shows and the guys on the road to reach their customers in a much more personal way. Made perfect sense to all of us at The DUB. But we’d certainly need the right hosts to pull this off. Well we found them.

The makeup of our hosts are a perfect fit for what we’re building at The DUB. They all are blessed with big personalities that work perfectly with the podcast concept (i.e. they aren’t shy about voicing opinions), and all of them are naturals behind the microphone and in front of the camera. The guys are also constantly working to make each of their shows as good as they can be – they’re booking their own guests, coming up with different ideas on how to improve their shows each and every week, and, perhaps most importantly, they’re having fun with it as well (as you can probably tell from the images in this article). So, if you have a business and would like to reach sports fans throughout DFW and Texas, or if you’d just like to join in on the fun, let us know. We’d love to have you along for the ride!
