Romo Returning Too?

1824

Having Jason Witten return to the Dallas Cowboys after just one year away from the game is one thing. Scoreboard has learned that an even bigger surprise is about to be dropped this week, as Tony Romo has had serious discussions with Jerry Jones about returning to the football field as well.

Apparently, Witten’s return has inspired Romo, and of course the two have had discussions of their own since they are close friends. The circumstances by which Romo left the game and the Cowboys have never sat well with him. You could say he feels that there is much “unfinished business.”

Part of this equation, obviously, is Dak Prescott. These is uncertainty within the Cowboys organization that Prescott is indeed a franchise quarterback worth locking up with big money, as that decision will have to come very soon. With Ezekiel Elliott, DeMarcus Lawrence, Amari Cooper and several other young stars that the team will have interest in keeping around, any uncertainty about Prescott cannot be taken lightly.

Pressure has also been manifesting internally among the players on Prescott as well, as several have doubts about his ability to win the big game when it matters most. There’s also the desire to see what Romo could do with Elliott, Cooper and the other weapons at his disposal.

Younger and more in his physical prime, Prescott has some advantages over Romo. But Jones knows there is no substitute for experience. Romo remains the Cowboys’ all-time leading passer.

Any chance that the quarterback would return to the gridiron would certainly be out the window past this year. Jones knows it. Romo knows it. Both want to grab this last chance and run with it.

Physical ability at the age of 38 isn’t an issue for Romo, who has stayed in good shape and is as motivated as ever. Those close to him say he is very excited about this challenge.

Rumors of Romo’s return have basically been kept under wraps, but his desire to become the highest-paid TV analyst in the game has also forced CBS’s hand and helped push this reality to the forefront.

If Romo does sign a new contract with the Cowboys this week, as expected, what does that mean for Prescott? Certainly he will be immediately added to the trade market, but what team makes the most sense to try and strike a deal with?

Let’s start in the NFC East, where both the Giants and Redskins are in the market for a QB. Neither of those make sense for Dallas. Perhaps Miami or even New England might be suitors for a deal.

Friends of Jones say he has been contemplating this move for over a year, and Witten’s return only fueled the fire. Surely the old combination of Romo-to-Witten sounded good to Jones and Jason Garrett.

Of course there’s plenty of risk in a move like this. What if Prescott becomes the franchise quarterback Jones was seeking somewhere else? What if Romo gets hurt again? Where do the Cowboys turn if the Romo move is a failure?

Only time will tell. But all indications are that this deal could go down as early as Tuesday. There are only three weeks until the NFL Draft and surely the Cowboys would like to get some picks in a deal for Prescott.

Lastly, how do the fans react to a move like this? Romo has his critics, but Prescott does as well. Witten doesn’t have to do much to prove himself with as good a track record as he has. Again, only time will tell.

Surely many of you reading this news are stunned and/or shocked. Maybe you’ll feel a little better if you take the first letter of every paragraph and see what it spells out.
