Reverse Barometer: Championship Sunday

Yes, it’s Wednesday, but it’s never too early to get the Reverse Barometer out for a good solid look at the NFL Conference Championship games this weekend. And since we here at ScoreBoard nailed both Clemson’s National Championship and the Packers’ win at the Cowboys last Sunday, you may want to listen up. Or not. We’re on a roll but we’re also due for a loss, so read ahead at your own peril.

For those of you who are still drowning your sorrows in the Cowboys’ loss, get over it. Aaron Rodgers has done that to a few teams over the years. Time to look ahead.

Packers at Falcons – NFC Championship

The biggest question is “will Jordy Nelson be back?” Guess what? It may not matter. When Rodgers is throwing the pill, he turns the ordinary receivers into stars. Did you see … Read More »

Numbers Game

Wait, I thought the New England Patriots were done. That’s all I heard about them, anyway, early in the season. Right around week four, questions swirled when the Pats fell to 2-2 after a 41-14 loss to the Chiefs. The biggest doubts were about quarterback Tom Brady; was he done?

Um, no.

New England went on to win 10 of its final 12 games, including seven in a row after the Kansas City romp. They went on to take out the Ravens in the Divisional Round and the Colts in the AFC Championship Game last night, 45-7. No, the Patriots refuse to go away. A look at some of the best conference championship games in NFL history; I picked my personal three greatest from each conference:

1982 (1981 season): Dallas at San Francisco — “The Catch.” Cowboy fans cringe at those two words, but I’m actually quite proud of them. … Read More »

Reverse Barometer: Divisional Playoffs

The Bengals are the most recent victim of the Barometer. What the heck was I thinking, taking them to win the AFC? Marvin Lewis wasn’t too thrilled with Andy Dalton (nor me). But hey, I did get the Colts and 49ers correct. The Eagles? Not so much. Oh well, let’s see what teams I can give the kiss of death to this week.

Saints at Seahawks (Saturday, 3:35 pm CST)

New Orleans won their first ever road playoff game last week at Philadelphia. Seattle has won five-straight home playoff games.

The road to the Super Bowl in the NFC goes through Seattle, who is practically unbeatable at home, especially in big games. These two teams met in week 13 in Seattle and the Seahawks earned a decisive 34-7 victory.

Can the Saints bounce back? Well, when you consider that the 27-point loss was the … Read More »
