Gretzky Adding Sex Appeal to Golf
With Tiger Woods on the golf sidelines for the next several weeks/months, who will step in to fill the void? What person can keep attention on the game when the world’s best player and one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet, is recovering from back surgery? Wayne Gretzky’s daughter Paulina of course! The hockey Hall of Famer has raised a daughter who has become the blonde Kardashian. Over the past several years she has Tweeted and Instagrammed her way into pop celebrity status. And at the same time, caught the eye of Dustin Johnson, one of the top 10 golfers in the world and her soon-to-be husband.
The editor’s at Golf Digest just decided to put Gretzky–the daughter–on their upcoming cover. The fact she isn’t a golfer may not matter much to the folks at Gold Digest, who are trying to sell Tiger-less magazines, but it sure hit a raw nerve on the women’s pro tour. Here’s what Stacy Lewis had to say. “It’s frustrating for female golfers,” Lewis told reporters at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, according to USA Today. “It’s the state of where we’ve always been. We don’t get the respect for being the golfers we are.” Lewis is ranked #3 in the world and surely thinks she might have earned a cover shot before a non-golfing hottie got one.
To be fair, Paulina is holding a golf club in the cover shot–well, she’s leaning on one while wearing a bikini top and skin tight leggings, but there is a golf club in the picture. The LPGA has struggled for decades to overcome the view that many of their players aren’t very attractive and don’t play with the same skill as the men. The tour has made a concerted effort to “pretty up” the impression people have of them and even tried to downplay the domination of Asians on the tour over the past decade.
Golf Hall of Fame member Julie Inkster wasn’t at all happy with the cover saying, “It’s Golf Digest, it’s not Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue,” Inkster said, according to The New York Times. “I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have. It’s like, what do you have to do to get a little respect? I’m guaranteeing you right now, it was not a woman editor who chose that cover.” That may be true, but the magazine is geared towards men 25-49 years old and Gretzky will probably get more attention and eyes than any LPGA player they could have chosen.
By the way, the past two women who’ve graced the Golf Digest cover have been Golf Channel anchor Holly Sonders, a hottie, and model Kate Upton (who posed with Arnold Palmer). The last actual women golfer on the cover was Lorena Ochoa…5 years ago. The LPGA may be pissed, along with feminists who hate this type of thing, but especially with Tiger on the sidelines, Golf Digest is getting just what they were hoping for–people talking about their magazine. I wonder how daddy Wayne feels about all of his daughter’s “exposure”. Wayne’s a pretty good golfer and might think HE deserved to be on the cover. But let’s be honest, he’s a smart businessman and realizes Paulina can pull off the bikini top a lot better than him.
